Judges Critique
CRUFTS 2015 BOLOGNESE – Judge MRS GRETA FRANKLIN
My thanks to the Cruft’s Committee for the invitation & congratulations on a well run show.
I was very pleased with my entry, both in quantity & quality. The absent bitches were due to them
being mated, or had puppies, which looks good for the future, here and in Europe.We didn’t get in
the ring until around 2pm so no excuses for not having your presentation tip top. Which it was. I
could see you had all made the extra effort. I do understand the work that goes into keeping the
dogs clean in bad weather so really value every entry.I found the breed to be of good temperament
& healthy. Movement does need to improve as there were some untidy moving exhibits that can be
helped with exercise and better schooling & handling.The atmosphere in and around the ring was
happy and excited. As soon as the ring became empty the exhibitors & Bolognese all took their
dogs into the ring for a pre- judge practice.The ringside was packed, some unable to find a seat, all
watching intently as this wonderful breed did their best to impress and charm us all. Many thanks
to the stewards who kept everything running smoothly.

Beautifully presented nine year old in full flocked coat. Masculine head, ears well set, eyes medium
size. Mouth level bite and full clean dentition. Well laid shoulders, straight legs, ribs well sprung,
well muscled hind quarters, high set tail. Holds his outline well when standing and on the move.
Shown in hard condition. Would have liked longer legs to complete the picture.

I liked this eleven month old boy’s shape and outline a lot. When he got into his stride he took
command of the ring and gave his all. Good head and muzzle, excellent pigment, ears and eyes
well set giving a lovely expression. Mouth perfect scissor bite. Medium length neck. Legs straight
as they can be given his good spring of rib. The coat is beautifully presented, white and stain free
of correct texture with flocking. His wagging tail completed the picture. Best Puppy.
2nd 15854 MRS J TOWERS – TUMBRIL TIMELORD
Impressive snow white puppy. Taller than first with a good outline. Good reach of neck, level topline,
high tail set, straight front and well angulated rear. Well proportioned head, good width in skull
and muzzle, ears and eyes well set giving a good expression. The ribs and chest yet to develop.
Would like more body weight to improve. Moved happily with an easy action. Still relatively young.
Has a bit to go with his development. Well done
3rd 15811 MRS C HENSHALL – BELLABLAKES MARC OF HONOUR
Compact very nice puppy with a clean head. Correct dentition and dark eye. Good body and top
line. High tail set, sound temperament, presented well and sound on the move.
Would just like him up on the leg to improve the overall outline. Shown well.

Well balanced dog not long out of puppy. Good framework & ribbing, well covered square body,
high tail set. Skull and muzzle correct length & shape, good scissor bite. Strong in forehand with
legs as straight as possible. Beautifully presented in correct flocked coat. Schooled & handled to
get all he had to offer.
2nd 15859 MRS D L WATSON – BUONCASA STARGAZER
Well proportioned head with a good width in skull& muzzle. Clean sparking eyes, scissor bite, teeth
white as can be, high well set ears carried & used well. Super bone and feet, completely balanced
in rear construction to give a strong outline. Well let down chest & spring of rib. Loin could be
shorter which distracts a touch. On the move effortless, shown and presented well.

Super quality stylish dog 19 months old with a simply stunning head, so well balanced and clean all
through. Good width of skull, correct muzzle & well set ears & eyes to complete the look. Appealing
head with soft expression from lovely dark eyes and striking pigmentation that could be seen from
the other side of the ring. Whiter than white flocked coat which was in immaculate condition. Good
rib, tight elbows. Moved with a positive uncluttered driving action completed a very good picture.
Well deserved Best Dog award.
2nd 15805 MRS J A EPSTEIN – BELLABLAKES BUGATIS BOW
All male in head with clean well set dark eyes & high ear set. Correct clean dentition, pigment a
little off today. He is a balanced dog who isn’t yet two years old & has a bit to go in his
development. Holds himself well on the move. Would like a shorter loin to complete a square
outline. Not as mature as first, never the less he moved so well and did his very best to shine. Well
presented flocked coat. Well done.

3rd 15857 MRS F WALKER – AEMILIA’S PRINCE EDUARDO
Loved this boy. Presented in clean condition, white coat, a little fluffy and over-groomed. Well let
down chest & spring in rib keeping his square shape standing. Great pigment. Would have liked
him to be more co-ordinated at times and show off himself to better advantage. Needs a bit more
work on his coat to see him at his best.
Res 15810 MR P A & MRS G I HAIG – AEMILIA’S MARCUS AURELIUS
I can see a great improvement in this exhibitors presentation. Well done. Standing on the table
much better but on the move he had his nose on the floor the whole time. This caused him to lose
his lovely shape. A little more practice needed for improvement.

Stood out in the class. His coat whiter than white. Excellent pigmentation. He was presented and
handled to show he had everything where it should be & used the ring to demonstrate this to good
effect. Broad handsome masculine head. Ears & eyes well set giving a calm and happy
expression. Excellent mouth, scissor bite & very white teeth. Deep chest, ample spring of ribbing,
well covered short loin. Desired square shape. Muscular in hard condition. All this giving the power
to move with style and cover the ground with ease. Delighted to award Res Best Dog.

Another stunning dog. Strong sturdy and square. Holds a good outline on the move and standing.
Good head, beautiful expressive eyes and well placed ears with correct ratios in skull and muzzle.
Ample substance throughout. Broad chest, good depth, powerful hind quarters allowing plenty of
drive. Coat flocked but not as white as 1st. Excellent pigmentation enhanced the head features.
Well shown and presented.

All male in head with clean well set eyes. Well placed high set ears. Good width of skull to muzzle
of correct length and shape. Strong forelegs, well let down chest, good ribbing. Would like legs a
little longer. Holds himself well on the move and commands the ring with his presence. Almost a
veteran and still has full dentition all in good order. Presented in full flocked coat in beautiful
condition. Pigment a little off today as many were. He charmed me, what a sweetheart.

This nine year old bitch. Her head obviously feminine all through. Clean eyes set well, ears high
set. Excellent straight front, ample chest & spring of rib. Coat full and flocked presented in white
condition. She was a delight to go over with very good forehand and equally balanced hind
quarters which meant she moved with an easy side gait. She pushed second hard and won the
class on her full clean dentition and good front.
2nd 15845 MR B T & MRS C THATCHER – DEVONIA LA VITA E’ BELLA
Another 9 year old bitch smaller than 1st. Boy could she move and keep up with the bigger girl!
This is a show girl who loves the big ring and couldn’t help but to show off for all she was worth.
Very feminine all through. Clean face, dark eyes, well set ears, good front & ample rib. Not the
dentition of 1st and that made the difference. So close, lovely bitch – what a sweetie.
3rd 15858 MRS F WALKER – AEMILIA LADY VITTORIA VON CHARLOTTE
This is the third 9 yr old. A nice size, not big or small. Her coat has been washed rather a lot and
was white but the texture suffered & was fluffy rather than flocked & a bit dry, but clean, and I
appreciate that. Good ribs & chest & straight front. Standing and moving square, she had less
teeth than second. On the plus side she behaved well and enjoyed herself.

Cracking young bitch, she is so feminine. Delightful head with a good width & sparkling clean eyes
and muzzle. Perfect scissor bite, pigmentation good, ears high set well feathered. Well made front,
enough spring of rib for her age, solid top line, well defined rear, positive driving action. Tail high
set, well plumed. The coat was beautifully presented and has the wow factor – flocking any breeder
would wish for. Handled sensitively to get the most out of this young puppy. Delighted to award
Best Puppy Bitch.
2nd 15830 MR D A & MRS C M MULLIGAN – DONOCIELO SERAPHINA
Another pretty young bitch with the sweetest expression. Dark captivating eyes, well placed, little
black nose, mouth good scissor bite. Very square standing, enough spring of rib for age. Solid top
line where she gets her positive driving action from to match her forward drive. High tail set, well
covered snow white coat coming nicely. She is not as mature as 1st but has the framework to build
on. She needs time to develop which I feel sure she will do.
3rd 15847 MS M L THOMAS – BELSTOWN RATHER GO NAKED
Loved this young girl. She excelled in coat, mature for age, well flocked and prepared to perfection.
She is a delight to go over with good front and hind quarters. Moved with an easy gait. Excellent
strong body well covered. Just preferred the head piece of 2nd. Handled well to show off her many
virtues.

Exquisite feminine bitch of lovely size. She was a delight to go over with very good forehand &
equally balanced hind quarters which meant she moved with an easy stride. Well let down chest &
spring of rib. Strong top line keeping her shape at all times. Moving, standing & stacked she is
square . Her attitude in the ring is top notch as is her performance that she gives in the breed ring
with her sympathetic breeder handler. So feminine and pretty yet very much a Bolognese. Her
head ratio of a well pigmented nose and dark eyes truly balanced. Her expression is calm, co
operative and an enthusiastic showgirl. Coat presentation absolutely fabulous. Super girl and
delighted to award Best Bitch and Best of Breed. A joy to watch her faultless performance in the
Toy Group and then to see her on TV with Claire Balding having her own interview. My star of the
day!
2nd 15809 MRS L GLOVER – LINA TEMPEST
Pretty little girl. Sweet feminine head, correct eye shape with a soft expression. Would prefer
slightly longer legs for the correct square shape. Well presented coat, nice and white with correct
flocking. A well maintained level top line on the move. Maybe a little ring craft could help you get
the best out of her, particularly when stacking for the judge. Well done!
3rd 15843 MR M & MRS D TAYLOR – DONOCIELO VALENTINA
Lovely puppy and very much a baby in this junior class. Really feminine in head with lovely eye
colour and expression enhanced by good pigment. Coat well presented and moved well. Truly
square when standing. Well done!

balanced and clean all through. She has a good width of skull, correct ratio in muzzle and good set
ears and eyes to complete the picture. Good forehand, straight and sturdy, muscular hind quarters
allowing her effortless action in the ring. Presented in sparkling condition with correct coat texture.
Well done.
2nd 15828 MRS H MCARDELL – TUMBRIL TANTRUMS AND TIARAS AT PHENDELLE
Pretty as a picture with the loveliest of heads from melting dark eyes and well placed nose. Super
quality flocked coat, excellent presentation, outline square with high tail set. Would prefer a larger
rib and more substance but she is young with time on her side.

Smallest and compact bitch who wasn’t in her best dress today. Underneath this neglected coat is
a lovely well made Bolognese. Pretty balanced head, high set ears, excellent rib, square shape,
high tail set. With shampoo, conditioner, grooming & time spent a transformation can be achieved.
She’s worth it.
